This years Associate artist is Jannie du Toit is one of South Africa’s most respected Afrikaans singer-songwriters and a pioneer in the development of light Afrikaans music, moden folk and cabaret. With a career spanning more than five decades, he has earned a special place in Afrikaans music history as an artist, stage personality, cultural worker and interpreter of songs in which words, chords, melody and meaning are central.

Johannes Hendrik du Toit was born on December 13th 1951 in Heidelberg, Transvaal. He matriculated at Menlopark High School and later completed B Iuris and LLB degrees at the Rand Afrikaans University, as well as a BA Hons in Afrikaans at UP. Although he qualified as a lawyer, his love for music and language ultimately determined his life direction. He had been active on the professional stage since 1971, and over the years has established himself as an artist with a fine sense of the language/tonal relationship of songs.

Du Toit began to gain fame in the 1970s as a founder member of the Afrikaans folk group Trilogie, which was already seen during the trial broadcasts of SATV in 1975. This early phase of his career already embodied his interest in original Afrikaans songwriting and meaningful lyrics. In 1976, Trilogie received international recognition when the group received an honorable mention at the American Song Festival — an important early milestone.

In the late 1970s, Jannie du Toit became a prominent voice in the “Musiek en Liriek” movement, a period in which Afrikaans music began to gain a new literary and artistic depth. Intimate creaive soirees at his home in Pretoria, achieved legendary status and brought together artists, writers and music lovers. These gatherings played an important role in the formation of a new Afrikaans song culture in which text, poetry, music and cabaret moved closer together.

His famous “’n Liedjie vir jou” from 1978, has achieved classic status in light Afrikaans music and remains the song with which audiences identify him most strongly. Through albums such as ’n Liedjie vir jou , Drie-uur in die môre, Palet, De Kleine Man, Volgende Winter, Diepverlange, Die Eggo van jou oë, Leeuspruit and Oesjaar 2018, Du Toit has built an impressive legacy that documents the development of light Afrikaans songs over several decades.

An important part of his artistic road was his long-standing collaboration with the pianist, composer and accompanist Christa Steyn. Their professional partnership, which spanned a full 25 years, made a special contribution to the Afrikaans music stage and cabaret. Together they created and performed work that was characterised by musicality, elegance and respect for language. In addition to his own songs, Du Toit also became known for his interpretations of European text music (“kleikunst”) and cabaret, especially the work of Jacques Brel. His interest in Dutch and Flemish music deepened his work and helped him build a unique bridge between Afrikaans music, European cabaret traditions and literary stage art. His first of 15 concert tours to date in the Benelux countries took place in 1988 – the most recent in 2025, and he has since played a role in introducing Afrikaans music to the Dutch-speaking world.

Jannie du Toit’s contribution extends beyond his work as a performing artist. He was also a cultural organizer and producer – as a cultural officer at the University of Pretoria and later at TRUK (The Transvaal Council for the Performing Arts), where he introduced light music, jazz and cabaret to new audiences. Over the years, Du Toit’s contribution to Afrikaans music and culture has been recognized in various ways. He has been bestowed honors from organizations such as the FAK, ATKV and the South African Academy for Science and Arts. In 2009, he was honored with a Medal of Honor by the latter and in 2023 at the Aitsa Afrikaans Music Awards for his exceptional career.

After more than fifty years on stage, Jannie du Toit remains an active and beloved figure in the Afrikaans arts world. Over the decades he has staged productions: Loeloeraai (1983), Gansdans (1985), Blik en Snaar (1986), Van Berlyn tot Bapsfontein (with Laurika Rauch – 1988), De kleine man (with Christa Steyn – 1994), Jannie en die Tannie (VONK Oscar winner in 2007 with Christa Steyn), Doep is nie dood nie (2014), Kiekies – Lucas se liedjes (with Thean Kotzé – 2016), Bonjour Monsieur Brel (2016), and more recently Margaretastraat, Oppiekitaar, De wals van de liefde, Langenhoven se Ruimtedroom and his very latest show and flagship production for his Jubilee year 2026 – Ramkietjie.
