Moving between the Netherlands and Kenya has taught Jasmijn Schrofer that no story looks the same from every perspective. Her multicultural background shapes her sensitivity to what is often left unsaid: whose voice is centred and whose perspective is missing. Through cinema, she brings together different cultural nuances and ways of seeing.

Jasmijn graduated as a documentary director from the Netherlands Film Academy in 2015. Her graduation film Tarikat, filmed within a Turkish Sufi community, explored devotion, ritual and belonging through an intimate, sensory approach. The film received the Sheffield DocFest Audience Award, the VPRO Documentary Award, a Vimeo Staff Pick and the Netherlands Film Fund Wildcard.

Her short film Birth of Light, filmed with the Samburu community in Northern Kenya, reflects on humanity’s growing dependence on electricity and questions what progress means when traditional rhythms begin to fade. It was selected for the Golden Calf Competition and Forum of Directors at the Netherlands Film Festival and received the Blue Planet Future Award in Korea.

Jasmijn creates immersive cinematic experiences in which visual language, emotion and narrative purpose strengthen one another. Her current project, a sequel to Birth of Light set in the sleepless megacities of East Asia, explores humanity’s changing relationship with light, progress and the rhythms left behind.

Alongside her independent films, she directs commissioned work connecting art, culture and sustainability, collaborating with international brands and cultural institutions.
