Kara Schoeman is a South African artist based in the scenic town of Clarens. Working across sculpture, installation, and video projection, her practice explores the intersection of art and psychology, with a particular focus on the human experience, belief systems and our relationship with the physical world. She was the first student in her department to create interactive video installations, in which the spectator’s physical appearance forms part of the artwork. This creates self-reflection in the spectator and challenges their physical boundaries. Her love for working with light stems from her interest in quantum physics, where light becomes a metaphor for how we interpret the physical world around us.
She holds a BA Fine Art (cum laude) and BA Honours in Psychology from the University of the Free State, as well as an Art Therapy Honours (cum laude) and a Master’s in Art Therapy from the University of Johannesburg. She has received numerous academic awards and has exhibited extensively at galleries and museums across South Africa. She practices as an Art therapist in Clarens, where her clients use various art mediums to express and explore themselves, working towards a more integrated self-image.
